Restore deleted environment
As a customer, you can delete an environment yourself by submitting a request. Of course, it is possible that you might accidentally delete the wrong environment, or that you delete an environment earlier than planned. In that case, you can restore the environment. There are various methods for doing this.
From 23 March 2026, a new method will be available. When you delete an environment, AFAS immediately creates a backup. You can have this backup restored! This was previously possible by submitting an incident to AFAS Support, but it has now become a fully self-service process. After submitting the deletion request, you will receive an email as soon as possible. This email contains a token that allows you to restore the environment yourself. This applies to production, test and acceptance environments.

How does AFAS handle backups
AFAS creates two different types of backups:
- Daily backup of production environments
Every night, we create a backup of production environments, which is retained for 30 days. You can restore a backup of a production environment by submitting a request. You can then use the Restore backup to a new environment and Restore backup as replacement of current environment actions.
- We do NOT create daily backups of test or acceptance environments. Therefore, you cannot restore these environments via a request.
- Backup when deleting an environment
When you delete a production, test or acceptance environment, we create a backup. This is a backup of your environment up to the moment of deletion (and not from the previous night). You will then receive an email containing a token. You can use this to have the deleted environment restored.
You can have a deleted production or acceptance environment restored up to 30 days after deletion. You can have a deleted test environment restored up to 7 days after deletion.
Restore a production environment uusing a token
If you delete a production environment, it will be blocked for 3 hours. Once the block takes effect, you will no longer be able to work in the environment. The deletion process will begin after 3 hours.
AFAS creates a backup of the environment, which is retained for 30 days, so you can carry out the steps below within 30 days.
Attention:
Take action as soon as possible if you have deleted an environment by mistake. If you start the restoration process using the steps below within 3 hours, we will be able to unblock the environment. This means you will have access to the environment again relatively quickly. If unblocking is no longer possible, AFAS will restore the backup. This may take some time.
Restoring the production environment using a token:
- The user who deleted the production environment will receive an email.
- Open the email you received from AFAS.
- Copy the entire token contained in the email; it will look something like this: 4f6eKuOKkte5KSAjIRHp8rK9ioRv_VbPQpUxrtnuSEw.
Go to the following webpage (depending on your language): - Paste the token into the field at the bottom.
- AFAS will check whether the token is valid. This happens in the background, so you won’t see immediately whether it was successful. Refresh the page using F5 to see any updates.
- Once your environment is ready, you will receive another email.
AFAS will attempt to restore the deleted environment under the same name. This is only possible if that name is not currently in use. If it is, a different name will be used. You will see this in the email.
Exmple:
You have deleted the environment O12345AA.
If the environment O12345AA does not exist when you restore the system, the name O12345AA will be used again.
If the environment O12345AA does exist, for example because you have restored a demo environment, AFAS will use the next available name. Suppose the name O12345AB is not yet in use; in that case, your environment will be named O12345AB.
Actions after restoring the environment:
- Reconnect/republish InSite.
- Unblock communication profiles.
- Unblock blocked tasks.
- Reset email settings for the environment.
- Reconnect bank integration for each account.
- Link the PCC again.
Restore a test or accept environment using a token
If you delete a test or acceptance environment, AFAS will create a backup and the deletion process will begin. There is no 3-hour period during which the environment is blocked. Therefore, the environment must always be restored in its entirety, which may take some time.
Please note the following timeframes:
- AFAS retains a backup of a test environment for 7 days. Therefore, you can carry out the steps below for a test environment up to 7 days after deletion.
- AFAS retains a backup of a production environment for 30 days. Therefore, you can carry out the steps below for a production environment up to 30 days after deletion.

According to my licence, I have reached the maximum number of environments
According to your licence, you are entitled to a maximum number of environments. If you restore an environment using the method described on this page, you may exceed the maximum number by 1.
Example 1: Maximum reached
You have deleted environment T12345AD. You currently have 5 environments and your licence allows a maximum of 5 environments.
You now have 0 available environments. However, you are allowed 1 extra environment if you use the method described above, so you can restore T12345AD.
Example 2: Maximum exceeded
You have deleted environment T12345AD. You currently have 6 environments and your licence allows a maximum of 5 environments.
You now have -1 available environments. This means you can no longer restore any environments, not even using the method described here. First, remove one environment so that the number of available environments is 0. You can then restore T12345AD.
